VIENNA, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Austria's year-on-year inflation rate reached 7.2 percent in April, the highest figure recorded since October 1981, Statistics Austria said on Wednesday.

The April inflation is 0.4 percentage points higher than that in March.

Tobias Thomas, director-general of Statistics Austria, said in a statement that surging fuel and energy product prices, as well as rising food prices, were the main drivers of inflation.

In late March, the Austrian government unveiled a two-billion-euro package (2.1 billion U.S. dollars) of measures to combat the accelerating inflation, including reducing taxes on natural gas and electricity. (1 euro=1.05 U.S. dollars)
