LJUBLJANA, May 5 (Xinhua) -- The number of unemployed people in Slovenia fell to 58,081 in April, the lowest level since the country's independence in 1991, the Employment Service of Slovenia (ZRSZ) said on Thursday.

It said the figure fell 4.1 percent from March and 26.7 percent from April 2021.

The previous record low jobless number was registered in September 2008. The jobless rate for April is scheduled to be published in June.

"The demand for workers increased by 40.1 percent in the first four months of this year compared to the same period of 2021," the ZRSZ said, adding that demand was the highest in manufacturing and construction, as well as for cleaners and waiters.

Slovenia was badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Its export-oriented economy started to recover in 2021, when the country's gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 8.1 percent. The government expects economic growth of 4.2 percent for this year.
