BERLIN, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has nominated Jennifer Morgan, head of the environmental protection organization Greenpeace International, as special envoy for international climate policy.

"I know of no other person in the world with her expertise, networks and credibility in international climate policy," Baerbock said at a press conference at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin. She said on Wednesday the appointment was a strong signal to the international community that Germany takes climate protection seriously.

Morgan has more than 30 years of experience in the environmental field. She already acted as an advisor to the German government during the country's Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in 2007, and in 2013, when former Chancellor Angela Merkel appointed her to the German Council for Sustainable Development (RNE).

"I want to bring my many years of experience in the climate movement and also in thinktanks into politics in order to support and advance the goals of Germany in the EU and worldwide," Morgan said at the press conference. "Time is short. We need unprecedented international cooperation to put the world on the 1.5-degree path."
