BERLIN, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- The container ship "Mumbai Maersk," which ran aground off the German North Sea island of Wangerooge on Wednesday, has been towed free, the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies of Germany (CCME) said on Friday.
The 399-meter-long container ship sailing under the Danish flag got stuck on its way from Rotterdam in the Netherlands to Bremerhaven in Germany while approaching the mouth of the Weser River. On Wednesday, an initial attempt to free the ship failed, according to CCME.
A second towing attempt with eight tugboats was successful, according to CCME. The container ship was then "able to continue its journey to Bremerhaven independently under tug escort."
"All crew are safe, there is no pollution and no sign of hull breach," the Danish shipping company Maersk and owner of the ship said in a statement on Friday.
Maersk is expecting to unload the cargo on board the ship in the German port on Saturday. ■
