MOSCOW, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Russia has registered 125,836 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the highest single-day increase to date, taking the national tally to 11,986,913, the official monitoring and response center said Tuesday.
The country's death toll grew by 663 to 332,012, and the number of recoveries increased by 40,301 to 10,288,582, it added.
The number of active cases in Russia rose to 1,366,319, while the mortality rate from COVID-19 infections dropped to 2.77 percent.
Moscow, Russia's worst-hit region, reported 21,533 new cases during the past 24 hours, taking its total to 2,378,884.
Mainly due to the Omicron variant, the current wave of infections plaguing Russia since early January will peak by mid-February, the country's consumer rights and human well-being watchdog Rospotrebnadzor predicted. ■
