MOSCOW, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Moscow registered 11,557 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, a record number of the single-day increase, as a new wave of infections is hitting Russia, official data showed Thursday.
The whole country reported 38,850 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest since Nov. 13, taking the nationwide tally to 10,938,261.
Meanwhile, death toll in Russia grew by 684 to 324,060, while the number of recoveries increased by 24,478 to 9,950,333.
There are currently 663,868 active cases in Russia, while the mortality rate from the COVID-19 infections stands at 2.96 percent. ■
