TOKYO, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 jolted central Japan early Sunday, leaving more than 20 people injured in Aichi and Shizuoka prefectures, Kyodo News reported.
The tremor struck at around 1:04 a.m. local time in western Shizuoka Prefecture, at a depth of about 40 km. It registered an upper 5 on Japan's seven-level seismic intensity scale in Chita City, Aichi Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). No tsunami warning was issued.
No abnormalities were detected at the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant in Shizuoka Prefecture, its operator, Chubu Electric Power Co., said.
Some local train services were suspended, while Tokaido Shinkansen bullet trains were delayed between Shizuoka and Gifu-Hashima stations for safety checks, railway operators said.
The central government set up a liaison office to coordinate its response to the earthquake. ■
