DHAKA, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh on Saturday observed National Revolution and Solidarity Day, commemorating the historic uprising of Nov. 7, 1975.
On the eve of the 51st anniversary, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages extending greetings to the people.
The day commemorates an uprising that brought Ziaur Rahman, who had declared Bangladesh's independence in March 1971, back to the center of the country's political and military developments.
The government and the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) organized a series of nationwide programs to mark the public holiday. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended a rally of the Gram Police, the country's lowest-level law enforcement force, at the National Parade Ground in Dhaka on Saturday.
The BNP also announced a seven-day program from Nov. 5 to 11 to mark the occasion, according to a party press release.
Earlier on Saturday, Tarique Rahman, who is also BNP chairman, joined party leaders and activists in laying wreaths and offering prayers at the graves of his parents: BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. ■
