CANBERRA, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Australia recorded 299,903 registered births in 2025, an increase of 2.6 percent from the previous year, official data showed on Friday.
The country's total fertility rate edged up to 1.497 babies per woman in 2025 from 1.481 in 2024, but remained at historically low levels despite the rise in birth registrations, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
"This is the third consecutive year the total fertility rate for Australia has been below 1.5 and is well below the 1.8 babies per woman seen a decade earlier in 2015," Beidar Cho, ABS head of population statistics, said in a statement.
The number of women of childbearing age increased from 5.7 million in 2015 to 6.6 million in 2025, according to the ABS.
The island state of Tasmania had the highest fertility rate among Australia's states and territories in 2025 at 1.568 babies per woman, while the Australian Capital Territory recorded the lowest at 1.283, Cho said, adding that fertility rates have declined across all states and territories over the last 10 years.
The fertility rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women stood at 2.234 babies per woman last year. A total of 26,733 births were registered among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in 2025, accounting for 8.9 percent of all births, according to the ABS. ■
