TOKYO, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Japan's electric vehicle (EV) sales topped 100,000 units in the first 10 months of 2026 for the first time, as demand continued to grow, local media reported Friday.

EV sales from January through October totaled 111,876 units, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association, Kyodo News reported.

Of the total, 95,614 were standard and compact electric passenger cars, while ultracompact electric vehicles accounted for 16,262 units.

The Japanese government currently provides subsidies of up to 1.3 million yen (about 8,200 U.S. dollars) for EV purchases.

Amid strong sales, applications for the current subsidy program are expected to close as early as December, while subsidy amounts will be reduced from January next year, the report said. ■
