KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Singapore and Malaysia announced Friday that they will increase the quota of licensed cross-border taxis from 300 to 500 per country from Nov. 16, as part of efforts to improve connectivity between the two sides.
The expanded quota under the Cross-Border Taxi Scheme will allow more taxis to participate and increase transport capacity for commuters, the two countries' transport ministries said in a joint statement.
Two new ride-hailing operators, Singapore's CDG Zig Pte Ltd and Malaysia's Kumpool Sdn Bhd, will also be licensed to operate under the scheme from the same date, giving commuters and drivers more options for cross-border point-to-point trips.
The latest changes build on enhancements introduced on May 4, 2026, which included designated pick-up points for ride-hailing bookings, more flexible drop-off locations, an increased taxi quota and additional enforcement requirements to prevent illegal domestic point-to-point trips.
"This development reflects the continued commitment of Singapore and Malaysia to strengthen cross-border connectivity and enhance the commuting experience for travelers between both countries. The improvements will further strengthen the strong business linkages and people-to-people ties between Singapore and Malaysia," the statement said. ■
