TOKYO, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended lower in volatile trading Wednesday, with the benchmark Nikkei briefly plunging more than 4 percent, after media projections showed that Democrats had regained control of both houses of the U.S. Congress.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 893.23 points, or 1.42 percent, from Monday's close at 62,188.63.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, fell 34.90 points, or 0.89 percent, to 3,895.38.

The tech-heavy Nikkei briefly tumbled more than 4 percent as artificial intelligence- and semiconductor-related shares came under heavy selling pressure amid concerns that a Democratic victory could lead to tighter regulation of the AI industry. Such policy changes could also affect Japanese companies expanding their AI businesses, analysts said. ■
