PHNOM PENH, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet met with Najat Maalla M'jid, the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Representative on Violence against Children, here on Wednesday to discuss progress and future strategies for child protection.

According to a press release from the prime minister's spokesperson unit, Hun Manet highlighted the government's firm commitment to preventing violence and protecting minors. A key element of this effort includes the ongoing drafting of the country's law on child protection.

He emphasized that government initiatives extend beyond merely mitigating negative impacts. Instead, the focus is on cultivating a warm, supportive environment for families. As an example, he pointed to the cash transfer program for pregnant women and children under two years. Administered by the National Social Assistance Fund (NSAF), this program protects maternal and child health, and notably extends support to pregnant women and young children living with their mothers in prisons.

The prime minister said that the UN's partnership, support, and contributions remain indispensable to Cambodia's progress. He reaffirmed the nation's firm commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the established timeframe.

For her part, M'jid praised Cambodia's strong commitment to deep-seated reforms that place citizens at the center of national policy.

According to the press release, she highlighted the expansion of social protection and security systems, noting that these initiatives have been widely welcomed by the public for their success in reducing poverty, enhancing child welfare, and improving overall public well-being.

Furthermore, M'jid commended the government's progress in implementing the National Action Plan on Prevention and Response to Violence Against Children 2025-2030, a vital framework for child protection in the country, the press release said. ■
