VIENTIANE, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Lao Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in collaboration with the World Bank, held a meeting in Lao capital Vientiane on Tuesday to discuss the country's tourism sector and explore ways to boost economic growth and create sustainable employment opportunities.

The meeting was co-chaired by Lao Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Dalany Phommavongsa and World Bank Country Manager for Laos Khwima Nthara, according to local newspaper Pasaxon.

In her remarks, Dalany highlighted Laos' rich natural resources, historical sites, cultural heritage and unique traditions as key advantages for tourism development. She noted that the government has identified tourism as a priority sector due to its significant contribution to socio-economic development.

From January to August 2026, the country welcomed 3,279,241 international visitors, representing a 7 percent increase compared with the same period in 2025.

The meeting included presentations on the current state of tourism in Laos and discussions on its role in driving economic growth and creating jobs. Participants also shared views and recommendations on ways to address challenges, strengthen the sector and enhance its economic contribution.

The discussions are expected to inform policies and practical measures under the Lao Tourism Development Plan for 2026-2030, supporting sustainable tourism development and maximizing the sector's contribution to the national economy. ■
