NEW DELHI, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed and two others injured in a devastating fire inside a shoe factory in the Indian capital territory of Delhi, police said Saturday.

The fire broke out on Friday night at the shoe factory in the Mangolpuri Industrial area of Delhi city.

"Six people were rescued from inside the factory in an unconscious condition and rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri," a police official said. "Four were declared dead at the hospital, while the other two are undergoing treatment."

Preliminary investigations by the fire officials said the blaze began in the basement of the footwear manufacturing unit, after which heavy smoke spread through the building, trapping workers on the upper floors.

An investigation is ordered to determine the cause of the fire, the police said. ■
