KABUL, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- One child was killed and four others sustained injuries after unexploded ordnance left over from past wars went off in eastern Afghanistan's Paktia province on Friday, a local police official said on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the Shapoli area, Dand Patan district of the province, after the children found the device and began playing with it, but the device exploded, killing one child on the spot and injuring four others, said Munib Zadran, the provincial police spokesman.

Afghanistan remains one of the world's most heavily contaminated countries with landmines and unexploded ordnance, a deadly legacy of more than four decades of successive wars and internal strife. ■
