CANBERRA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Australia has appointed Rachel Moseley as its next Ambassador for Arms Control and Counter-Proliferation, Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced on Saturday.

Wong said in a statement that the ambassador plays a key role in advancing Australia's security interests and reducing threats posed by weapons of mass destruction amid heightened global risks.

Moseley will lead Australia's efforts to counter the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems, including chemical and biological weapons, and support the effective regulation of conventional arms.

She will also work to strengthen nuclear non-proliferation, reduce nuclear risks and advance disarmament, while promoting Australia's commitment to maintaining the highest non-proliferation standards in acquiring conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines.

Moseley is a senior career diplomat who currently serves as Assistant Secretary of the Arms Control and Counter-Proliferation Branch at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

She previously served as Australia's Ambassador to Mexico and held diplomatic postings in Papua New Guinea and Geneva.

She will succeed Vanessa Wood, who has held the position since 2023. ■
