KABUL, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Afghan counter-narcotics units have intercepted a drug-smuggling attempt, confiscating 14.2 kg of methamphetamine in the eastern province of Nangarhar, local media outlet TOLOnews reported late Thursday.
Acting on intelligence tips, counter-narcotics personnel launched a targeted raid on the outskirts of Dur Baba district, thwarting traffickers' attempts to transport the consignment beyond Afghanistan's borders, TOLOnews quoted Wahidullah Mohammadi, spokesman for Khalid bin Walid army corps, as saying.
While not stating the number of arrests, the official underscored that authorities will maintain an uncompromising zero-tolerance stance toward the production, sale, or smuggling of illicit narcotics throughout Afghanistan.
In a parallel development, the Ministry of Interior Affairs announced on Thursday the recovery of more than 1.2 tonnes of illegal substances, primarily opium and hashish, in coordinated operations across several provinces, including the capital, Kabul. ■
