TOKYO, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Sagawa Express Co., a major Japanese parcel delivery company, said Friday that up to 53.23 million records containing personal information may have been leaked following unauthorized access to its parcel tracking system.

The potentially compromised information includes names, addresses and telephone numbers of parcel senders and recipients, as well as email addresses registered with the company's membership service, Smart Club. Information related to corporate customers with freight service contracts may also have been exposed, the company said.

Sagawa Express said the potentially affected data covers shipments handled from June 21 through Sept. 30, as well as information registered with Smart Club and data on corporate clients.

No credit card information or sign-in passwords for the tracking service were exposed, the company said.

The company confirmed on Sept. 30 that its parcel tracking service, known as the Parcel Inquiry Service, had been accessed without authorization by a third party, and partially suspended its internet-based services to prevent further damage.

Following a detailed investigation, the company disclosed Friday that the number of potentially affected records could reach 53.23 million.

However, Sagawa Express cautioned that the figure includes a considerable number of duplicate records and does not represent the number of individual people affected. The company said it is organizing the data to determine the precise number of affected records. ■
