PHNOM PENH, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia and Nicaragua have pledged to enhance bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting regional and global peace, stability, and development, according to a press release from Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Thursday.
The pledge was made during the first round of political consultations between the two foreign ministries from Oct. 18 to 19 in Managua, Nicaragua. The meeting was co-chaired by Meas Kim Heng, secretary of state of Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, alongside Nicaragua's Co-Minister of Foreign Affairs Valdrack Jaentschke and Laureano Ortega Murillo, presidential advisor for the promotion of investments, trade, and international cooperation.
Both sides noted with satisfaction the fruitful outcomes achieved over the years. These milestones include the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the establishment of political consultations on issues of common interest, as well as an agreement on visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and official passports, both signed in Phnom Penh in April 2026.
The two sides exchanged views in depth on political and economic developments in their respective countries and discussed ways to enhance cooperation in trade and investment, culture, tourism, parliamentary cooperation, and other areas of mutual interest, the press release said.
On the multilateral front, both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening cooperation across various platforms, including the United Nations and the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to promoting regional and global peace, stability, and development, and emphasized the importance of upholding international law and resolving disputes peacefully through diplomatic and legal means, the press release added.
The two nations officially established diplomatic relations in 1994. ■
