SYDNEY, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- A 56-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly making verbal threats while armed with nunchucks at the electorate office of Western Australian state MP Hannah Beazley in the state capital, Perth, on Wednesday.
Police said the man was arrested in nearby Bentley after reports of a disturbance at the office at about 1:15 p.m. local time. He is assisting police with their inquiries. No one was injured in the incident, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
Beazley described the incident as a "confronting situation," saying a member of the public had entered the office armed with a weapon, the report said, adding that she did not know the motivation behind the incident and would not comment further while police investigated.
The incident came two days after an attack on federal MP Helen Haines, who remains in critical condition in hospital after being run over outside her electorate office in the Australian state of Victoria.
Leaders of Western Australia's political parties are due to meet with government, police and parliamentary representatives on Thursday to discuss safety issues following the attack on Haines. ■
