JAKARTA, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for reform of the UN Security Council during a visit to Indonesia, warning that some permanent members are undermining international peace and security by waging wars and disregarding international law.

Speaking at the Foreign Policy Circle Talks event at Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Monday, Guterres questioned whether the council's current composition reflected today's geopolitical realities.

"Unfortunately, today, we see permanent members of the UN Security Council waging wars while disregarding international law," he said, adding that the council's current structure no longer adequately represents the world, limiting the United Nations' ability to maintain international peace and security.

"Multilateralism is not an option but a necessity," said Indonesian Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir, stressing that no country, regardless of its strength, could address today's global challenges alone.

Guterres arrived in Indonesia on Oct. 17 for a three-day official visit, during which he met with President Prabowo Subianto and other senior officials.

The visit highlighted Indonesia's efforts to strengthen multilateral cooperation and promote reforms aimed at making global institutions more representative and responsive to contemporary challenges. ■
