SYDNEY, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- A long-running agricultural show in Perth, the capital of the state of Western Australia, was forced into lockdown and closed early on Saturday evening after fights involving groups of youths escalated.
Police were called to the Kelmscott Agricultural Show at Rushton Park in Kelmscott on Saturday afternoon after dozens of youths attempted to enter the venue, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on Sunday.
Kelmscott Agricultural Society president Daryl Dawes said fighting inside the showgrounds escalated throughout the day, culminating in between 50 and 70 juveniles trying to gain entry, according to the report.
The show went into lockdown at about 5 p.m., with all gates physically padlocked until police arrived to deal with the disturbance outside, Dawes told the ABC.
The show, which has run for more than 100 years, was locked down for the first time in Dawes' eight years as president. Police said no charges had been laid, but one juvenile received a caution for disorderly behavior, according to the report. ■
