KABUL, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- A total of 987 Afghan refugee families, comprising 4,528 individuals, returned to their homeland, Afghanistan, from neighboring Iran and Pakistan over the past week, the deputy spokesman for the Afghan government announced on Saturday.
All returning families have received immediate assistance, including food, drinking water, healthcare services, and free transportation to their destinations, Hamdullah Fitrat posted on his X account.
The majority of the former refugees have returned from Pakistan, the official added.
A report released in September by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said that 6 million Afghan nationals have returned to their homeland in less than three years. ■
