COLOMBO, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka experienced a nationwide power outage on Saturday following a total system failure caused by instability in the electricity transmission network, the National System Operator (NSO) said.

The outage was reported at around 11:45 a.m. local time. The NSO said the country's power grid suffered a complete system failure after instability developed in the transmission network.

Electricity supplies were interrupted across the island, and restoration work was underway, it said.

The NSO also requested owners of rooftop solar photovoltaic systems to disconnect their installations until further notice to assist with efforts to restore the national grid.

The public was urged to cooperate with the request until further instructions are issued.

The NSO said its technical teams were working to restore electricity supplies and return the system to normal operation as soon as possible. ■
