PHNOM PENH, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Friday celebrated World Food Day 2026 in the far northeastern province of Ratanakiri, aiming to raise awareness and inspire collective action toward food security, improved nutrition, and zero hunger, according to a news release from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).

Under the global theme "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow," the event brought together government representatives, development partners, farmers, and Indigenous communities to highlight agricultural innovation, sustainable food production, and rural livelihoods.

Organized by MAFF in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP), the celebration was attended by MAFF Secretary of State Keo Omalis, FAO Representative to Cambodia Rebekah Bell, and WFP Deputy Country Director Fumitsugu Tosu.

The celebration featured Indigenous cultural performances, traditional food demonstrations, agricultural exhibitions, the distribution of vegetable seeds and tree seedlings, and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony.

"The event aims to raise awareness and inspire a collective global spirit regarding the importance of ensuring food security and nutrition while combating hunger," Omalis said at the ceremony.

"The Royal Government's Pentagonal Strategy - Phase 1 places a strong focus on developing the agricultural sector, ensuring food and nutrition security, and promoting environmental sustainability," he added.

The official expressed high appreciation for the FAO, WFP, relevant partner organizations, inter-agency bodies, and sub-national administrations for their vital roles in providing food and nutritional support to vulnerable communities throughout Cambodia.

According to the news release, a special highlight of the event was the recognition of 10 outstanding women for their contributions to agriculture and rural development, marking the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026. ■
