KABUL, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities set fire to more than 3.5 tons of illicit drugs, including heroin and opium, in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar on Sunday, provincial police spokesman Sayed Tayeb Hemad said Monday.
The narcotics, seized during a series of operations over the past six months, were publicly burned at a ceremony attended by local residents and officials, Hemad added.
Government officials warned during the ceremony that no one was permitted to produce or traffic illicit drugs and vowed to take strict action against those who violated the law.
Earlier, police reported seizing 469 kg of opium and arresting three drug smugglers in the western province of Farah on Saturday. ■
