TOKYO, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended lower Thursday, as investors locked in gains following a recent rally, while rising bond yields weighed on market sentiment.

The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 993.60 points, or 1.42 percent, from the previous session at 69,042.11.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 62.65 points, or 1.51 percent, lower at 4,091.46.

Investors locked in gains after a recent rally that saw the benchmark Nikkei cross the psychologically important 70,000 level and the Topix hit a record closing high, analysts said.

Most sectors declined, following overnight losses on Wall Street as the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note briefly hit 5.36 percent, its highest level since 2002. Rising yields fueled concerns that higher borrowing costs could weigh on consumption and investment. ■
