SUVA, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 jolted 102 km northeast of Norsup, Vanuatu, at 08:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was determined to be at 15.541 degrees south latitude and 168.189 degrees east longitude, according to the USGS.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not immediately issue a tsunami warning based on the quake.
Staff at the Chinese Embassy in Vanuatu told Xinhua that no tremors were felt in the capital, Port Vila, and that there is currently no further information regarding the affected area.
Pacific island countries such as Fiji, Tonga and Vanuatu lie on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones where continental plates collide, producing frequent seismic activity. ■
