TOKYO, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and another injured after shootings took place at two locations in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan, on Wednesday, local media reported.
Police arrested a suspect, a 79-year-old man, near one of the shooting scenes, according to public broadcaster NHK.
Police received a report at around 1:15 p.m. local time that a man had been shot with what appeared to be a handgun on a street in Kobe's Chuo Ward.
The man, in his 50s, was shot in the abdomen and taken to a hospital, but was later pronounced dead, the report said.
About 20 minutes later, at around 1:35 p.m., another incident was reported in the city's Hyogo Ward. A man, also in his 50s, was shot in the back and taken to a hospital.
Police officers found and secured the suspect, who was reportedly a former member of an organized crime group, near the scene in Hyogo Ward and seized a handgun in his possession. The man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the Kobe Shimbun reported.
Authorities are investigating the details of the series of shootings. ■
