TOKYO, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday that its global sales dropped 6.4 percent in August from a year earlier to 790,743 units, marking the second consecutive monthly decline.
Meanwhile, its global production fell 5.9 percent year on year to 700,860 vehicles, also down for a second straight month.
The company's overseas sales slipped 8.4 percent from a year earlier to 685,676 cars, marking the seventh consecutive monthly drop. By market, sales in China plunged 22.8 percent, while those in the United States slipped 4.4 percent and those in the Middle East sank 37.5 percent, according to the world's largest automaker by volume.
Domestic sales in Japan, however, rose 9.1 percent to 105,067 units, largely supported by strong demand for new models.
Overseas production, meanwhile, declined 7.6 percent to 496,373 vehicles, extending its losing streak to four months.
Domestic output also decreased 1.7 percent to 204,487 units, marking the first decline in four months. Toyota partly attributed the drop to production disruptions caused by the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan in July, as well as typhoons. ■
