TOKYO, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower on Monday, ending a five-trading-day winning streak for the benchmark Nikkei stock index, as concern over rapid gains weighed on the market.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 486.58 points, or 0.73 percent, from Friday at 65,877.62.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 16.59 points, or 0.40 percent, lower at 4,112.00.
On the top-tier Prime Market, pharmaceutical, mining and pulp and paper issues were notable decliners.
The Nikkei index opened higher as investors extended their buying of technology shares, following Wall Street's gains late last week. Demand also picked up ahead of the deadline to qualify for dividends, analysts said.
But after topping the 67,000 mark for the first time since mid-August, the Nikkei slipped into negative territory on overheating concerns, following the winning streak through Friday that lifted it by more than 2,800 points. ■
