PHNOM PENH, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Wednesday hosted the International Conference on Combating Online Scams, aimed at sharing best practices and strengthening global cooperation against this growing threat.
In his keynote address, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized that online scams constitute a cross-border regional issue rather than a single-country problem.
"We gather here today to exchange perspectives and to reaffirm a decisive and collective commitment against one of the most complex threats of our digital age," he told the conference.
He noted that Cambodia cannot eradicate this transnational crime alone, adding that sustained international cooperation is essential to overcoming the challenge.
Under the theme "Acting Together towards Breaking the Chain and Eradication of Online Scams," the conference was co-sponsored by the International Criminal Police Organization, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, and the Lancang-Mekong Integrated Law Enforcement and Security Cooperation Center.
Over the course of the two-day event, officials and experts from more than 20 countries and international organizations will participate in sessions covering online scams as a global emergency, regional and global responses to cyber fraud, technology, prevention, cyber resilience, and individual countries' counter-scam efforts.
Cambodia has launched an unprecedented nationwide crackdown on cyber scam networks since mid-last year to ensure public safety and restore its international image.
According to government data, authorities shut down 663 online scam sites across the country, 86 of which were classified as large-scale scam compounds, between July 2025 and August 2026. ■
