SYDNEY, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A shark that fatally attacked a swimmer at a beach in Western Australia (WA) on Friday will be caught and killed, the state fisheries minister said on Saturday.
A 63-year-old man was swimming at Sorrento Beach in the northern suburbs of the WA capital of Perth on Friday morning when he was attacked by a great white shark.
An emergency search was launched by sea and air for the victim, but he was declared deceased later on Friday.
Responding to the attack, Minister for Fisheries Jackie Jarvis on Saturday said she has issued a catch and kill order for the shark.
Capture gear was deployed on Friday and beaches in the area remained closed to the public on Saturday while authorities continued searching for the shark and the man's body.
Jarvis said it was the first time in 10 years that a catch and kill order had been issued for a shark in WA, but said that a widespread cull of sharks was not appropriate.
She said that deploying more drones to spot sharks along the state's coastline was under consideration. ■
