SUVA, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's Ministry of Health urges the public not to self-medicate with antibiotics for influenza, emphasizing that most cases are viral and can be managed with home care and rest.
Minister for Health and Medical Services Atonio Lalabalavu said individuals experiencing flu symptoms should focus on rest, hydration, and managing their symptoms while recovering.
He also advised those feeling unwell to stay home to avoid spreading the virus to others, Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reported on Friday.
Lalabalavu said simple medications like paracetamol can help alleviate symptoms of the common flu, such as fever, headaches, and body aches.
Suva-based doctor Rajesh Maharaj echoed the minister's advice, saying antibiotics should only be taken following a medical assessment and are generally not needed for routine flu infections.
"If the symptoms do not get better after three to five days, then the doctors may consider giving you antibiotics," he added.
The ministry also reminds the public to maintain good hygiene habits, such as regular handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick, to help reduce the spread of influenza. ■
