COLOMBO, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka commissioned its first battery energy storage system in the north-central city of Anuradhapura on Friday, an effort to expand renewable energy use and improve the stability of the national electricity grid.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake unveiled a commemorative plaque and inspected the facility, which has a capacity of 10 megawatts. Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Anura Karunathilaka also participated in the event.
The system is designed to support the integration of renewable energy into the national grid. Officials said the remaining battery storage systems planned under the project are expected to be completed and connected to the grid within the next two to three months. The planned systems will have a combined storage capacity of 520 megawatt-hours. ■
