MELBOURNE, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Two women have died and a man has been hospitalized following a collision between two vehicles in southwest Melbourne on Wednesday night.

Police said in a statement on Thursday that emergency services were called after a Toyota and a Porsche collided at an intersection in the suburb of Point Cook, 21 km southwest of central Melbourne, around 9:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

The driver of the Toyota and a passenger, women aged 33 and 67, both died at the scene.

The 53-year-old male driver of the Porsche was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said that detectives from the major collision unit have commenced an investigation into the collision and that the 53-year-old man is assisting with inquiries.

According to the latest official data, as of Sunday, there had been 177 deaths on roads in the state of Victoria in 2026, down from 209 at the same point in 2025.
