TOKYO, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks edged higher Wednesday amid a wait-and-see mood ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest rate decision.

The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 438.90 points, or 0.69 percent, from Tuesday at 63,923.00.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, gained 24.56 points, or 0.61 percent, to finish at 4,061.72.

On the top-tier Prime Market, oil and coal products, mining, and textile and apparel issues were notable gainers.

The benchmark Nikkei index spent much of the morning in negative territory before heavyweight technology shares helped pull it higher.

Buying in non-technology shares lifted the Topix index. The yen's weakness near a one-week low also drew buyers to exporters such as automobile shares.

Analysts said stocks fluctuated as investors braced for the outcome of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy meeting, with an interest rate hike widely anticipated.
