KABUL, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Afghan security forces have uncovered a cache of firearms and ammunition concealed in a truck transporting returnees at the Torkham border crossing in eastern Nangarhar province, a local police official said Friday evening.
During a routine vehicle inspection, personnel discovered 17 pistols along with a quantity of ammunition, said Sayed Tayeb Hamad, the provincial police spokesperson, adding that the driver was arrested and his case file will be forwarded to the judiciary.
The seizure follows a separate operation on Thursday in neighboring Logar province, where forces confiscated five AKS-74U assault rifles, four M4 carbines, five AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and other military equipment.
Afghan authorities have intensified efforts to intercept the illicit flow of weapons into the country, with particular focus on border regions, as part of broader measures to enhance national security and public safety. ■
