COLOMBO, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- At least 22 people were hospitalized after a private bus veered off the road and overturned into a canal in Sri Lanka's North Central Province on Thursday, the police said.
The accident occurred at around 4:45 a.m. while the bus was traveling to Colombo, said the police, adding that the injured passengers were admitted to regional hospitals for treatment.
The accident occurred near an area that police described as accident-prone. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash.
Road accidents are common in Sri Lanka. The country recorded a total of 2,562 fatal road accidents in 2025, according to police statistics. ■
