YANGON, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar held a ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw to mark International Literacy Day 2026, according to the state-owned daily The Global New Light of Myanmar on Wednesday.
During the ceremony on Tuesday, President Min Aung Hlaing said Myanmar's literacy rate had increased to 92.1 percent, while the numeracy rate rose to 92.3 percent, citing the 2024 census.
He said literacy is a fundamental human right and an essential driving force for human resource development.
In line with the principle of "Education for All," the president called for vigorous efforts to implement basic literacy campaigns, continuing education programs, and non-formal primary and secondary education programs for out-of-school children, so that everyone, including those living in rural and remote areas, can become literate.
Similar ceremonies were also held in other regions and states across Myanmar. ■
