YANGON, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The opening ceremony of the 23rd Southeast Asia Red Cross Red Crescent (RCRC) Leaders Meeting was held in Yangon on Monday, the state-owned daily The Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Tuesday.

The Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) hosted the Southeast Asia RCRC Leaders Meeting in 2012 and is hosting it for the second time in 2026, the report said.

During the meeting, Union Minister for Health Thet Khaing Win said the theme, "Unity in Humanitarian Action: Building a Better Tomorrow," highlights the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing humanitarian challenges facing the world today.

He said the MRCS plays an important role as a reserve force of the country in disaster preparedness and emergency response nationwide.

He also noted that the government maintains continuous cooperation to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches those in need.

The three-day meeting will run through Wednesday, according to the MRCS.
