COLOMBO, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet on Tuesday gave approval to move forward with proposed legislation targeting organized crime, clearing the bill for publication in the government gazette ahead of its submission to parliament.
The proposed law is designed to strengthen the country's legal framework for dealing with organized criminal groups and serious offenses, while also improving measures intended to protect the public from such threats.
The bill also seeks to bring Sri Lankan law in line with obligations under the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. It includes provisions aimed at supporting cooperation with both domestic and international authorities in efforts to prevent and suppress organized crime.
The drafting process followed a cabinet decision made on March 30, 2026. The legal draftsman subsequently prepared the bill, which has since received the Attorney General's clearance.
Following legal reviews, the cabinet approved a joint proposal by the Minister of Justice and National Integration and the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs to publish the draft legislation in the gazette, and thereafter table it in parliament for approval. ■
