HONIARA, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- A member of parliament of the Solomon Islands said Sunday he has withdrawn the motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Matthew Wale, removing a major political flashpoint just before parliament was due to resume on Monday.
Member of Parliament for East Malaita and former Minister of Home Affairs Manasseh Maelanga made the announcement publicly and assured that he now intends to fully support the current leadership of Wale.
He did not cite specific reasons for the reversal, though he acknowledged that Malaitans had been calling on him to withdraw the motion.
In late August, Maelanga resigned from the coalition government under the leadership of Wale and filed a notice of motion of no confidence against the prime minister, accusing him of making major national decisions without properly consulting and gaining the approval of the cabinet.
Wale was sworn in as the Solomon Islands' prime minister in May 2026 after he was elected by members of parliament, succeeding Jeremiah Manele, who was removed from office earlier in the month after parliament passed a motion of no confidence. ■
