KABUL, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Ministry of Martyrs and Disabled Affairs has disbursed more than 192 million U.S. dollars in assistance to widows, orphans and people with disabilities over the past year, government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid announced on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference in the capital, Kabul, Mujahid said the ministry distributed 12.6 billion afghanis (over 192.6 million U.S. dollars) to 650,000 beneficiaries during the period.

In a complementary effort, foodstuffs and non-food items valued at around 10 million dollars were provided to 100,000 impoverished families across the country, with support from aid organizations.

The initiatives form part of the government's broader social welfare program, designed to ease the economic hardships confronting vulnerable segments of society amid persistent socio-economic pressures.
