Afghanistan seized 2,159 tons of drugs in 46,700 operations over past year: spokesperson

KABUL, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Afghan counter-narcotic forces have executed 46,700 anti-drug operations over the past 12 months, resulting in the confiscation of a staggering 2,159 tons of illegal narcotics, government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid announced on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference in the capital, Mujahid said that authorities arrested 13,326 individuals on charges of drug smuggling and dismantled 533 clandestine drug-processing laboratories during the operations.

In a major crackdown on illicit crop cultivation, security forces destroyed more than 21,560 hectares of land used for growing poppy and hashish across the country during the period, the spokesman added.

In the fight against illicit drug use, police have rounded up 33,320 drug users nationwide, while 32,876 former addicts have made full recoveries and have been successfully reintegrated with their families following treatment at rehabilitation centers, according to the official.
