TOKYO, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Capital spending by Japanese companies increased 1.6 percent in the second quarter of 2026 from a year earlier, government data showed Tuesday.

Investment by all non-financial sectors for purposes such as building plants and purchasing equipment stood at 13.03 trillion yen (about 82 billion U.S. dollars), the Ministry of Finance data showed.

Major sectors with higher capital spending during the April-June period included services and goods rental and leasing, while spending fell in the transport machinery and telecommunications equipment sectors.

Pretax profits climbed 24.6 percent to 44.67 trillion yen, up for the seventh straight quarter, while sales rose 5.9 percent to 393.94 trillion yen, according to the ministry.

The latest figures will be used to revise Japan's gross domestic product data for the April-June quarter, which showed the economy expanded at a weaker-than-expected annualized real rate of 1.1 percent. The Cabinet Office will release the revised GDP data next Tuesday.
