KUALA LUMPUR, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia marked the 69th anniversary of independence on Monday, with national leaders joining a huge public turnout at the administrative center of Putrajaya to witness a parade celebrating the National Day.
Over 10,000 people formed 76 contingents representing various segments of Malaysian society, according to the Malaysian national news agency Bernama.
The country's King, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, oversaw the parade, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and cabinet members joining him.
In his National Day message, Anwar urged Malaysians to remain united in developing the country, regardless of their backgrounds. ■
