KABUL, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's central bank, Da Afghanistan Bank, announced Sunday that it has collected and incinerated more than 2.5 billion afghanis (about 38.5 million U.S. dollars) worth of worn-out banknotes over the past year, the official Radio and Television of Afghanistan (RTA) reported on Monday.
The obsolete notes, spanning the 10, 20, 50, 100, and 500 afghani denominations, were gathered from across the country before being systematically incinerated, RTA quoted the bank's spokesman Hasibullah Noori as saying.
In a parallel effort, the central bank is injecting newly printed currency into the market to replace the deteriorated notes, ensuring that citizens can conduct daily transactions without disruption or delay, Noori added.
Afghan bank authorities have reiterated their steadfast commitment to progressively withdrawing worn-out banknotes from active circulation, signaling a broader effort to modernize the nation's monetary system and preserve the integrity of its currency. ■
