KABUL, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Afghan police discovered 159 kg of opium in the southern Zabul province and took into custody three smugglers on Saturday, spokesman for the provincial police office Zabihullah Jawhar said Sunday.
The contraband was recovered from a car during search operations, and three individuals from the car were arrested on charges of drug trafficking, the official said.
The trio will be handed over to the judiciary after the completion of a preliminary investigation, the official added.
Stern action will be taken against anyone who produces or smuggles illegal drugs elsewhere in the province, the official said. ■
